In 2018, we identified a gap in the market for premium, locally produced denim. Manufacturing denim was an efficient, industrial-scale operation here in Aotearoa until the mid-90’s. A jean requires resilient and careful hands, and a humbling level of technical skill across several unique machines for a finish that is equal parts beautiful, high quality and functional. We believed that nurturing back to life this form of manufacturing locally would not only improve our own ability to create locally, but also benefit innumerably our local creative community. Through ANNARODEWIJK, we were able to offer refined classic denim in essential cuts and colours, manufactured between Auckland, Christchurch, and eventually Melbourne. Each garment was made with certified organic 100% cotton; a classic right-hand twill weave, sourced from Milan-based denim mill Candiani. The denim you will find available here, have been constructed and finished end-to-end within a small production cycle, providing both consistency of quality and transparency of process.

The economic upheaval between 2020 and 2023 saw the closure of key businesses within the local manufacturing cycle we had realised. We can no longer produce this denim to the required quality standard within Aotearoa, and so here you will find the remaining stock we have available. No further production will take place. We feel a profound sense of gratitude towards our clients, peers and way-pavers, and our hope is that we might continue to contribute to our community in new ways.
